Our Project Need
What problem did our team address? How did this need align with our impact area? What research did we do to find out what already exists to address this problem?
The problem our group wanted to address was the lack of green space at our school, and the few seating options we have during lunch and nutrition breaks. Our goal was to change the school into a beautiful place by changing one corner of our turf into a garden. This would help our school address "Health and Wellness" because this will help students to spend time outside in the fresh air, as well as show them the many fruits and vegetables that can be grown at home and in gardens. It also will provide students with another shady space to spend time at lunch and nutrition breaks.
We looked at other schools that had gardens to get inspired. Some of our team members went to old elementary schools to see what has been done. This helped us to brainstorm the size of the garden and the types of plants to include.
Since the turf is our only play area at school, we had to make it small enough that students can still play around it. We also needed to make the garden entirely movable, because our principle wanted the space to be available in case of emergencies. We solved these hurdles by using a small unused square around the corner of the turf, and by installing lockable wheels onto the planters we built.

RMMS
Our school, Richard Merkin Middle School, is an Alliance College-Ready Academy which prepares students for college and beyond. Richard Merkin Middle School has an after school program called All Stars, which helps students with homework and has different activities such as music, so students can get to know each other.
RMMS tries their best to make education fun and engaging so we can be prepared for challenges that get in our way.
